A World without Global Warming
What will happen if we succeed in reversing global warming and save our present world? The transition would create unprecedented economic opportunity, much of it for smaller businesses, as we change from vast, polluting, capital intensive energy production to more local and smaler scale sustainable energy. The World War Two level effort we need to make will create millions of jobs and revive us economically just as WW2 got us out of the great depression. We will reap the tremendous windfall of effeciency as we move to public transportation, and everyone will have to work less. Most of the world will be able to stop sending vast fortunes to a handfull of countries to have enough oil for all those cars. All this money could go to creating better hospitals and schools and cleaning up our world. We could save our oil for more usefull things like the packaging the modern world relies on as well as millions of other important products made from oil.
Cities will be much more livable and beautiful as we remove the biggest cause of sight, sound and air pollution, all that traffic. Imagine avenues more like parks and appropriate mass transportation that is faster than cars. All the trees we would plant would make the world much more natural and beautiful, as well as create vast habitat for all the creatures we have pushed towards extinction. As it would probably require a few blocks walk to get to public transportation and there would be less meat consumption, it would mean a much healthier world. It would go a long way towards reversing America's obesity epidemic, as well as making universal health care and saving Medicare here in America much more affordable and possible. We could build covered pedestrian pathways for walkers, bikers, skateboarders and skaters, encouraging these wonderful uses of real biofuel. Then it would be easy to use a bike, the most effecient form of transportation ever invented.
It will be a much more peaceful world and bring an end to oil wars and the majority of resorce driven conflicts. People will be much happier without the wars and the worries about the future we will leave our children, and everyone will be dealing with a lot less stress. As mass transit is much more afforable and effecient, we will all have time and money for more useful activities than buying gas and sitting in traffic. It will be a better, healthier, happier, more peaceful and more beautiful world once we have made the transition that we ultimately must make to sustainability.
Twelve years ago a book was published that envisioned a positive future world where Humanity had come together to triumph over the ecological crisis we had created and had built a sustainable future. They found that the world they created was even more enjoyable, healthier, more peaceful and equitable than the polluted and destructive world they had left behind, and not just for humans, but for the other species who share the planet. Twelve years later this book has proven to be amazingly prophetic. This is the kind of positive, inspirational vision we need to bring to the world. This is what former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore wrote about "There is a Tomorrow."
"As a former journalist and as an author, I have a profound respect for the power of the written word. As we look toward the beginning of a new century, new ideas, new perspectives, and new approaches to our society need and deserve careful attention. I know how difficult writing can be, and I commend you for the time and effort you have invested in your book."
